XVIII Open Arts Festival Chereshnevy Les: The Encounter
On May 25th the XVIII Open Arts Festival Chereshnevy Les and the Golden Mask Festival presented the play of Simon McBurney The Encounter, released by the British theater Complicité based on the book Amazon Beaming by Peter Popescu on the stage of the Pyotr Fomenko Workshop Theater.

The production presented to the Moscow viewers for the first time is based on the synthesis of storytelling and multimedia technologies, which, according to The Stage newspaper, allows to tell a wonderful story in an unprecedented way. Simon McBurney's mono performance is created after the documentary book of the Romanian writer Peter Popescu Amazon Beaming. The story of the protagonist – the American photographer Loren McIntyre becomes the story of the meeting of McBurney himself with the book, the author and the plot created half a century ago. Virtuoso actor Simon McBurney performs the main and only part of the play, turning an almost empty stage into a jungle through the stereo sounding, lighting and his own skill.

The story of a journalist stuck in the wilds of the Amazon forests, naturally and easily evolves into the dialogue of civilizations, generations, nature and man heard by the viewer in individual headphones, to which multi-channel sound is delivered using binaural technologies. Simon McBurney is in touch with person, launching a multi-figure fairy show, existing only in his imagination. Sound images and pictures are incredibly clear and saturated, allowing the viewers to make a real "walk through the brain" and realize that not everything in this world is dependent on man.

After the show, Simon McBurney drew the attention of the public that the play is done not by him only. The idea was accomplished with the help of sound engineers Gareth Fry and Pete Malkin, the production designer Mikhail Levin and the light artist Paul Anderson. He also said that he went on the route of his hero to meet with the Majori tribe while working over the play and was personally convinced of its existence.

The Encounter has visited the world's best theater festivals, and its showing within the Chereshnevy Les & Golden Mask Festivals has become the long-awaited event of the Moscow's theatrical life. The audience gave McBurney a standing ovation. Roman Abramovich, Edith Kusnirovich, Andrei Konchalovsky, Yulia Vysotskaya, Michael Bird and many other famous guests came to greet Simon McBurney.

The Encounter is the result of collaboration of the Complicité Theater and the Edinburgh International Festival, the Barbican Center (Great Britain), The Onassis Cultural Center (Athens), the Schaubühne Theater (Berlin), the Vidy-Lausanne Theater (Switzerland) and the Warwick Arts Center (Great Britain).
