Do you remember the fervent song of the circus artist Marion Dixon performed by the legendary Lyubov Orlova? 80 years later, one of the most talked-about theatrical directors of the new generation Maxim Didenko took on the musical comedy of Grigory Alexandrov. On May 11th, the theater program of the XVII Open Arts Festival Chereshnevy Les was started by the loud first-night of the musical Circus at the Theater of Nations.
Ingeborga Dapkunaite, a laureate of the Oleg Yankovsky Prize and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Chereshnevy Les Festival stars in the production.
Leonid Parfenov, Sergey Filin and his wife, Stas Namin, Philip Yankovsky, Tatyana Navka, Alexander Oleshko, Dmitry Malikov and his wife, Mikhail Barshchevsky, Lyudmila Zorina, Alisa Grebenshchikova, Vadim Vernik and others were among the first to see the new production.
The plot of the legendary movie of 1936 was transferred to the modern world by the authors of the production. Familiar since childhood, the story of an American woman who came to Moscow on a tour, and found a home and love here - in fact, has not changed, but acquired a modern form.
Incendiary music, space scenery, flights over the stage, 3D projections - the performance is very complex in terms of technic, music and plasticity.
"Flight to the Moon" is not the name of the legendary item on the circus program, but a real journey to the Earth satellite. There is lot of "space" in the production. The legendary space dogs Belka & Strelka, the rocket created by the Soviet inventor Skameikin and even extraterrestrials.
According to the director Maxim Didenko, “Circus” is the iconic movie, "which was imprinted in the subconsciousness of every Soviet man as an ideal image of the Soviet Union”.
XVII Open Arts Festival Chereshnevy Les has prepared many other interesting events this year. The complete program of the festival can be found here.
