Tickets for Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre Performances Already Available!

The 21st Cherry Forest Open Art Festival invites everyone to see the Saint Petersburg Boris Eifman State Academic Ballet Theatre tour performances on the Historical Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre from July 27 to August 1.

The famous ballet master, creator of an entire universe of dance Boris Eifman is celebrating his 75th jubilee. His extraordinary productions gained international renown and the praise of audiences and critics around the world. Moscow citizens have come to associate Boris Eifman Theatre tours with Cherry Forest Festival. Each year the maestro entrusts the festival to bring his productions to Moscow. This year Cherry Forest Festival is proud to produce several Eifman pieces on the Historical Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. The program includes one Moscow premiere.

July 27-30. The Molière Passions or The Mask of Don Juan, Moscow premiere

The Molière Passions or The Mask of Don Juan marks the second time Boris Eifman returns to the life and works of the famous comedy playwright. Just as was the case in the 2001 production of Don Juan & Molière (the best of the choreographer’s works, in the opinion of The New York Times critic Anna Kisselgoff), the new ballet gathers dramatic power in the contradictory unity of theatre and reality, in the complex and paradoxical relationships between author and character. At the same time, the new production sees Eifman providing an even more detailed portrait of Molière.

By going behind the curtain, the audience understands what sort of intrigues, complications, and worries gave birth to timeless comedies. Eifman sees Molière, a playwright at his theatre, as his spiritual doppelgänger. Colorful scenery, elaborate costumes, dynamic lighting serve to underline the drama.

July 30-31. Anna Karenina

In addition to the Molière premiere, the troupe will also present another production in 2021: Anna Karenina. The ballet is focused on internal psychological energy and is remarkably precise in its emotional impact. By cutting all the secondary material of Leo Tolstoy’s novel, the choreographer emphasizes the love triangle of Anna – Karenin – Vronsky.

Through the plasticity of the body, Eifman presents the tragedy of a woman reborn. In the opinion of the choreographer, passion, the basic instinct, leads to the violation of social norms, destroyed maternal love, and devastated the inner world of Anna Karenina. A woman completely absorbed and crushed by carnal infatuation is prepared to sacrifice everything.

August 1. Boris Eifman Jubilee

To celebrate the 75th jubilee of Boris Eifman, a special program, including scenes from the maestro’s selected productions, will be presented. The Saint Petersburg Boris Eifman State Academic Ballet Theatre, established by Eifman in 1977, is a unique experimental laboratory, revealing the philosophy of the outstanding choreographer who utilizes the language of dance to reveal to the audience the most complex and emotional facets of human existence. Eifman states that he works in the genre of “psychological ballet”.
