The play is directed by Théâtre national de l’Odéon director Stéphane Braunschweig. This is his first project in Russia. Braunschweig considered staging Chekhov’s play for almost 30 years. The director presents the topical theme of environmental protection in his production. Astrov, one of the characters, proved to be something of a prophet: in the play he experiences a great distress due to the cutting of forests – a message for us to focus on the environmental problems faced by the world today.
Without changing a single word in the text, Stéphane Braunschweig sets forth a tantalizing puzzle of how to view the relationships between the characters. Voynitsky, Astrov, Helena Andreyevna, Sonya – all of them experience some sort of disenchantment and abandons his or her delusions during the course of the play. But can one continue leaving with ideals lost? Chekhov’s characters suggest several ways of dealing with this crisis.
We also remind our customers that there are still tickets available for the Moscow premiere of Boris Eifman’s The Pygmalion Effect (July 25, 26, 27). The production will be presented on the Historical Stage of the Bolshoi as part of the Cherry Forest Open Art Festival program.
